About the city
Alcalá is a municipality in the northeastern Valle del Cauca, nestled in the Central Andes about 220 km from Cali. Founded in 1791 and incorporated as a municipality in 1919, it forms part of the Coffee Cultural Landscape declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Its economy centres on coffee, plantain and citrus, while its natural setting — rivers, waterfalls and hiking trails — draws adventure and rural tourists year-round. Bamboo rafting on the La Vieja river and the annual samán tree festival are its most cherished traditions.
