About the city

Alpe Cimbra is a territorial community of southern Trentino-Alto Adige encompassing the municipalities of Folgaria, Lavarone, Luserna, and the Altopiano della Vigolana. Situated on a high plateau between the Prealpi Vicentine and the Adige valley, at altitudes ranging from 1,000 to 1,550 metres above sea level, the community has a combined population of around 4,600 inhabitants. Beyond its demographic dimension, the territory holds exceptional natural, historical, and cultural value: the village of Luserna harbours the last living Cimbrian linguistic island in Europe, where a variant of Middle High German—Cimbrian—has been spoken for over a millennium. In 2006, Folgaria, Lavarone, and Luserna founded the Magnifica Comunità degli Altipiani Cimbri for the shared management and development of the territory.

Sportingly, Alpe Cimbra was proclaimed European Community of Sport 2025 by ACES Europe at the European Parliament in Brussels, the result of a three-year certification process that recognised its exceptional mountain sports facilities—with more than 1,000 km of ski slopes, 350 ski lifts, and an annual tourist flow of 7–8 million visitors—the high number of international sporting events, and above all its commitment to sporting inclusivity. In July 2025, Folgaria hosted the international gathering 'ACES – Destinazione Montagna', turning the plateau into a European reference point for sport in the high mountains.
