About the city
Andalucía is a unique municipality in Valle del Cauca located 111 kilometres north of Cali, with an area of 168 km² and an altitude of 995 metres above sea level. Founded in 1836 by Nicolás Lozano Santacruz, it achieved municipal status in 1884 and starred in a unique event in Colombia: in 1921, its inhabitants chose the name 'Andalucía' by popular vote, making it the only municipality in the country to have changed its name by direct will of its citizens.
The municipality's economic identity is closely linked to the artisanal production of beef-foot gelatine, which has earned it the title of 'Gelatine Capital of Colombia'. This culinary tradition, combined with citrus cultivation and livestock farming, forms the local productive fabric. In terms of physical activity and citizen wellbeing, Andalucía promotes community sport in a temperate, scenic environment that encourages citizen participation in active health programmes.
