About the city

Antwerp, the largest city in Flanders and one of Europe's great ports, was the European Capital of Sport 2013, the first Belgian city to receive the title. The distinction drove the expansion of 'Sporting A', the municipal sports service designed to get Antwerp residents moving with activities, events and facilities, under the idea that exercise goes beyond organised sport — it is also walking or playing with children and grandchildren. The city paired the title with the development of active transport, with plans to asphalt and extend more than 30 kilometres of cycle paths. Antwerp also holds a place in Olympic history as host of the 1920 Games, a legacy that reinforces its sporting identity.
