About the city
Aosta is the capital of the Aosta Valley, Italy's smallest and least populated region, an Alpine city set at the bottom of a valley surrounded by the highest peaks in Europe, from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa. Of Roman origin — it preserves notable remains of Augusta Praetoria — it is a bilingual city (Italian and French) and a gateway to some of the great ski resorts of the Alps, such as Courmayeur or Cervinia. Its high-mountain setting links it naturally to skiing, mountaineering and winter sports. Aosta was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2017, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
