About the city
Ariccia is a town in the metropolitan city of Rome, in Lazio, one of the Castelli Romani, the historic towns of the Alban Hills south-east of the capital. With some 17,000 inhabitants, it is famous for its monumental Baroque centre, largely the work of Gian Lorenzo Bernini — with the Chigi Palace and the Piazza di Corte — and for its gastronomy, especially porchetta, which draws visitors from across the region. Its setting of volcanic hills and forests favours walking and outdoor activities. Ariccia was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2012, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
