About the city
Asiago is a town in the province of Vicenza, in the Veneto, located on the eponymous plateau, a mountain tableland of the Venetian Prealps at around 1,000 metres of altitude. It is famous for its PDO cheese, for its cross-country skiing tradition and for its astrophysical observatory, one of the most important in Italy. The plateau was the scene of harsh fighting in the First World War, a memory preserved by its great military ossuary. Its mountain setting makes it a consolidated destination for winter sports and outdoor activities. Asiago was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2016, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
