About the territory

Asturias, officially the Principality of Asturias, is a single-province autonomous community in the north of Spain, washed by the Cantabrian Sea and with 1,015,128 inhabitants on 1 January 2025 according to the INE. It is the most mountainous autonomous community in Spain, and its relief is crowned by the Picos de Europa, a national park shared with Cantabria and Castile and León. The Kingdom of Asturias was born on its territory in the 8th century, and the Monuments of Oviedo and the Kingdom of the Asturias, of Asturian pre-Romanesque art, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Its most populous municipalities are Gijón, Oviedo, the capital, and Avilés.

Asturian football is led by Real Sporting de Gijón, with 42 seasons in the top division, and Real Oviedo, which returned to the top flight in 2025 after 24 years in the lower divisions, although it was relegated again in 2026. Since the 1930s, the final stretch of the river Sella, between Arriondas and Ribadesella, has hosted every August the International Descent of the Sella, a canoeing race with participants from several countries. The mountains add the Valgrande-Pajares winter resort, opened in 1954, and Fuentes de Invierno, opened in 2007, while bowls (bolos), in their various forms, are the main indigenous sport. Asturias is also the home region of the Oviedo-born driver Fernando Alonso, Formula 1 world champion in 2005 and 2006.

ACES Europe recognised Asturias as European Region of Sport 2025. That year, the region was among the Spanish awarded administrations received by the director of the sports daily MARCA, alongside Toledo, Alcobendas and Segovia, European Cities of Sport, and Calanda and Luarca, European Towns of Sport, the latter within Asturias itself. The recognition places the Principality within the Spanish representation of the ACES network, where it was preceded as European Regions of Sport by Andalusia (2021) and Castilla-La Mancha (2024).
