About the city

Atri is a town in the province of Teramo, in Abruzzo, perched on the hills overlooking the Adriatic coast, not far from the sea. Of very ancient origin — it was the Hatria of the Romans, which gave its name to the Adriatic Sea — it preserves a notable medieval old town with its cathedral and is famous for the calanchi, the singular formations of eroded clay that surround the municipality. With just under 6,000 inhabitants, it is a municipality of historical and agricultural tradition in the Teramo interior. Atri was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2012, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
