About the city

Besozzo is a municipality of the Province of Varese, Lombardy, nestled on a panoramic hill between Lake Varese and Lake Maggiore. With around 8,700 inhabitants, the town occupies a privileged position in the heart of the Varesotto, traversed by the clear waters of the Bardello River, which connects the two lakes through a landscape of notable environmental value. The territory has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by archaeological findings of pile-dwelling settlements on the shores of the nearby lakes. The Castello di Besozzo, erected in the 7th century as a defensive tower and rebuilt in Renaissance style in the 15th and 16th centuries by the noble Besozzi family, is the historic symbol of the town.

Sportingly, Besozzo actively participates in the sporting life of the Province of Varese, with associations dedicated to football—the municipal pitch 'Cav. Sergio Marvelli'—artistic gymnastics, and various fitness disciplines. The Sentiero dei Mulini, a 16-kilometre trail winding through historic 18th- and 19th-century mills along the Bardello and Monvallina rivers, has become a popular route for hiking and road cycling. Besozzo's participation in the European Week of Sport reflects its commitment to promoting physical activity as a community asset.
