About the city
Biella is a city in Piedmont, capital of its province, located at the foot of the Biellese Alps, in the north of the region. With some 43,000 inhabitants, it is famous worldwide for its high-quality wool textile industry: the Biella area is one of the most prestigious wool centres on the planet, cradle of great firms in the sector. Above the city rises the sanctuary of Oropa, one of the largest Marian sanctuaries in the Alps. Its mountainous setting favours hiking and mountain sports. Biella was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2014, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
