About the city
Bogotá, the Capital District of Colombia, rises 2,600 metres above sea level on the vast Sabana de Cundinamarca, where the Andes reach their greatest breadth. Home to more than eight million people, it is the country's most populous metropolis and the economic, political and cultural engine of a nation of 51 million. Its urban fabric weaves together the colonial quarter of La Candelaria, a world-renowned museum corridor — including the Gold Museum — and a business ecosystem that ranks it among the top ten financial centres in Latin America.
In sport, Bogotá has built one of the most advanced urban physical-activity ecosystems in the hemisphere. The Ciclovía, born in 1974 as a citizen-led initiative, closes 127 kilometres of roads to traffic every Sunday and public holiday for cyclists, skaters and pedestrians, regularly drawing more than 1.7 million participants in a single session. The permanent cycling network spans over 550 kilometres, and the TransMilenio rapid-transit system integrates sustainable mobility at metropolitan scale.
Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín, inaugurated in 1938 for the Bolivarian Games, is the historical home of Bogotá football and the ground of Millonarios FC and Santa Fe. In 2025, the city submitted an official bid for the 2027 Pan American Games, backed by a sports-infrastructure investment plan that envisages transforming El Campín into a covered 45,000-seat venue meeting FIFA and Olympic standards.
Bogotá also hosts the Instituto Distrital de Recreación y Deporte (IDRD), the agency overseeing more than 4,000 parks and sports facilities spread across the city's 20 localities. This sustained, cross-party institutional commitment has made the Colombian capital a Latin American benchmark in democratising sport and physical activity as civic rights.
