About the city
Buenaventura is Colombia's main seaport and one of the ten most important in Latin America, channelling over 53% of the country's foreign trade through its bay on the Pacific Ocean. Declared a Special District in 2013, it is the only municipality in Valle del Cauca with a Pacific coastline, and is distinguished by its rich Afro-Colombian culture, seafood cuisine and musical tradition. In 1973, balón pesado — the only team sport created in Colombia — was born here, and is now played throughout the department.
