About the city

Cairo Montenotte is a town in the province of Savona, in Liguria, located inland, in the valley of the river Bormida, in the transition zone between the Ligurian Apennines and Piedmont. Unlike the region's coastal towns, it is an inland municipality with an industrial and agricultural tradition. With some 12,000 inhabitants, its setting of valleys and hills favours hiking and outdoor activities. Cairo Montenotte was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2013, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
