About the city

Candás is the main town of the municipality of Carreño, on the central coast of Asturias, about 13 kilometres from Gijón and a similar distance from Cape Peñas. With just over 7,000 inhabitants, it is a seafaring town with a harbour documented since the Middle Ages, whose economy revolved for centuries around fishing and, later, the canning industry. Its sporting life looks to the sea and to football: sailing, swimming, underwater and surfing clubs are based around its harbour, and Candás Club de Fútbol, founded in 1948, plays at the La Mata ground. Candás was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2023, a title reserved for municipalities with fewer than 25,000 inhabitants that places it within the Spanish representation in the ACES network.
