About the city
Cartago is the most important city in northern Valle del Cauca and one of the main commercial hubs of the Colombian Coffee Region. Founded in 1540, it retains a significant colonial heritage and is internationally recognised for its fine-thread embroidery, a tradition declared Intangible Cultural Heritage. With over 143,000 inhabitants and a strategic position between Cali, Pereira and Medellín, Cartago serves as the services, education and trade centre for the entire northern subregion of the department.
