About the city
Castelldefels is a city in the comarca of Baix Llobregat, in the province of Barcelona, set on the eastern part of the Garraf massif and open to the Mediterranean with a beach more than five kilometres long. With some 66,000 inhabitants, it preserves its castle, built in the 10th century on a hill, which took its final form in the 18th century and now serves as an exhibition space. Its great sports facility is the Catalonia Olympic Canal, built for the flatwater canoe events of the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games and now open to a range of sports. The city also has clubs such as UE Castelldefels, founded in 1948, and Castelldefels Hockey Club, as well as climbing areas in the Garraf such as Penya Ginesta and Roca Negra. Castelldefels was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2013, a title that places it within the Spanish representation of the ACES network.
