About the city
The Castelli Romani ('Roman castles') are a territorial community in Lazio that brings together the municipalities of the Alban Hills, the area of volcanic hills south-east of Rome traditionally known by this name. It is a territory of strong identity, famous for its historic towns — such as Frascati, Castel Gandolfo or Nemi — its volcanic lakes, its wine and its proximity to the capital, which has long made it a summer retreat for Romans. Its landscape of hills, lakes and forests, largely protected as a regional park, is a natural space for hiking and outdoor activities. Castelli Romani was recognised by ACES Europe as European Community of Sport 2020, a category reserved for territories that bring together several municipalities around sport, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
