About the city
Castiglione del Lago is a town in the province of Perugia, in Umbria, located on a promontory on the shores of Lake Trasimeno, the largest lake in peninsular Italy. With just over 5,000 inhabitants, it preserves a notable walled historic core, with its medieval Fortress of the Lion and the Ducal Palace. Its lakeside setting, in a protected area famous for its birdlife, favours water sports, cycling and hiking. Castiglione del Lago was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2022, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
