About the city
Cetinje is the old royal capital of Montenegro, set at around 650 metres of altitude on a small karst plain surrounded by limestone mountains, at the foot of Mount Lovćen. Founded in 1482 by Ivan Crnojević, who built its monastery two years later, it still houses national institutions such as the Blue Palace, the official residence of the country's president. In the neighbouring Lovćen National Park stands the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. With just over 15,000 inhabitants, the town counts football, handball and basketball as its most popular sports, and FK Lovćen, founded in 1913, is the oldest football club in Montenegro. With the backing of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee, Cetinje has been designated European Town of Sport 2027, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants that places it within the Montenegrin representation of the ACES network.
