About the city
Chorrillos is one of the 43 districts of the province of Lima and one of the oldest and most historically rich on the Peruvian coast. Its name recalls the freshwater springs that flowed from the cliffs towards Agua Dulce beach, and since the seventeenth century it served as the summer retreat of Lima's aristocracy. On 13 January 1881, during the War of the Pacific, its inhabitants heroically resisted the advance of the Chilean army at the Battle of Morro Solar, an episode that earned it the declaration of Heroic City and that forms a constitutive part of the district's collective identity.
Today Chorrillos is above all a city of the sea and of sport. Its 15 kilometres of coastline, from Agua Dulce beach to La Herradura, concentrate Lima's largest offering of water sports: surfing, paddleboarding, open-water swimming, triathlon, and sport fishing. The Morro Solar, which rises above the sea at 247 imposing metres of rock, has become a circuit for mountain biking, trail running, and climbing. The IPD Beach Sports Academy, inaugurated in 2025, provides free training to young people in beach volleyball, beach soccer, and surfing.
In May 2024, ACES America and ACES Europe unanimously communicated that Chorrillos would be the American City of Sport 2025, having outcompeted more than 90 candidates from across the continent. The evaluation committee highlighted the unique articulation between exceptional natural resources, modern sports infrastructure, and social inclusion, reflected in programs reaching 20,000 participants during the American Week of Sport. The distinction, endorsed by UNESCO, consecrated Chorrillos as Latin America's reference for sport in world-class natural environments.
