About the city
Ciudad Victoria is the capital of the state of Tamaulipas, located in the west-central part of the state at the foot of the Sierra Madre Oriental at 320 metres above sea level, with a population of approximately 332,000 inhabitants. Founded in 1750 and named after Guadalupe Victoria, Mexico's first president, it is the main administrative, educational and cultural centre of northeastern Mexico. The presence of the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas gives the city a strong university character that energizes local sporting life, with an active practice of football, baseball and track disciplines. Its natural surroundings, flanked by the Sierra Madre Oriental, also offer opportunities for hiking, mountain biking and active nature tourism.
