About the city
Civita Castellana is a municipality in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio, built on a tuff spur between the deep gorges of two tributaries of the Treja, along the Via Flaminia, in the Tiber valley. With almost 12,000 inhabitants, it stands on the ruins of Falerii Veteres, the city of the Faliscans, whose finds are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of the Agro Falisco, housed in the Forte Sangallo, the fortress commissioned by Pope Alexander VI. Its cathedral, the work of the Cosmati, preserves a 12th-century façade with polychrome mosaics. Since the 19th century it has been a major ceramics centre, above all for sanitary ware, and its sporting life spans football, volleyball, cycling and rugby. Civita Castellana has been designated European Town of Sport 2027, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
