About the city
El Cairo is a small municipality at the far northwestern tip of Valle del Cauca, sharing a border with Chocó, one of the most biodiverse departments on the planet. Its rural, coffee-growing character reflects the paisa colonisation that arrived in these mountains in the late 19th century, and its jungle setting with crystal-clear rivers offers unique ecotourism opportunities and contact with nature. The tranquillity and relative isolation of El Cairo have preserved an authentic way of life and rural traditions little altered by modernity.
