About the city
Florence is the capital of Tuscany, one of the most important cities of art in the world, located on the banks of the river Arno, in the heart of the region. Cradle of the Renaissance, it was the city of the Medici, of Dante, Michelangelo and Leonardo, and its historic centre — with the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Uffizi Gallery and the Ponte Vecchio — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With more than 360,000 inhabitants, it combines its extraordinary heritage with an intense cultural life. It is the birthplace of historic Florentine football, the calcio storico. Florence was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2012, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
