About the city
Forlì is a mid-sized city located on the Po Plain, the provincial capital of Forlì-Cesena in the Emilia-Romagna region. Founded as a Roman municipality along the Via Emilia route, it has over 117,000 inhabitants and preserves a historic centre of notable cultural value, dominated by Piazza Aurelio Saffi and the San Domenico Museums, which house internationally significant art collections. The city is historically renowned for having been the lordship of Caterina Sforza in the 15th century and for its active role in the Italian Risorgimento.
In the regional sporting landscape, Forlì is distinguished by its tradition in basketball—with Unieuro Forlì competing in Serie A2—football, cycling, and athletics. The presence of Luigi Ridolfi Airport has also driven aeronautical disciplines and adventure sports. The city actively participates in the European Week of Sport and promotes grassroots sport through an extensive network of multi-sport associations involving thousands of practitioners across the provincial territory.
