About the city
Forte dei Marmi is a coastal town in the province of Lucca, in Tuscany, located in Versilia, the Tuscan coastal strip at the foot of the Apuan Alps. With just over 7,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most exclusive summer destinations in Italy, famous for its sandy beaches, its elegant bathing establishments and its sophisticated atmosphere. Its name refers to the former loading of Carrara marble, quarried from the nearby Apuan Alps. Its coast favours beach and water sports. Forte dei Marmi was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2013, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
