About the city
Guadalajara is the capital of the state of Jalisco and Mexico's second most important city, with a municipal population of nearly 1.4 million and more than five million in its greater metropolitan area. Founded in 1542, the Pearl of the West has forged over centuries a singular identity that blends deep tradition with bold ambition: it is the birthplace of mariachi, charrería, and tequila — all three recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity — and is equally regarded as one of the continent's leading technology hubs, earning the nickname 'Mexico's Silicon Valley'.
In sports, Guadalajara commands global recognition. It hosted the XVI Pan-American Games in 2011, an event that permanently modernised the city's sporting infrastructure. Its stadiums and sports centres welcomed World Cup football in 1970 and 1986, and in 2026 the city will complete the historic feat of hosting three FIFA World Cups — a distinction it shares solely with Mexico City. In recent years it has also served as host to the Para Swimming World Series (2023 and 2024) and the Caribbean Series of Baseball (2018).
The most distinguished recognition came in December 2019, when ACES Europe designated Guadalajara the World Capital of Sport 2020, making it the first city in the Americas to hold that title. The designation was unanimously extended to 2021 in response to the global pandemic, securing two consecutive years of worldwide sport captaincy. ACES Europe Secretary General Hugo Alonso Castañón highlighted the continued public use of the Pan-American infrastructure as a cornerstone of the candidacy.
Beyond elite sport, Guadalajara is a city in perpetual cultural and economic motion. Its UNESCO-listed historic centre coexists with a thriving gastronomy scene, internationally acclaimed film, dance, and music festivals, and a technology industry that draws talent from across the region. Guadalajara is, in short, the most accomplished synthesis of Mexico's deep soul and the ambition of a contemporary metropolis.
