About the city
La Spezia is a city in Liguria, in the far east of the region, capital of its province and home to one of the main naval bases of the Italian navy, at the head of a broad natural gulf of the Ligurian Sea. With more than 90,000 inhabitants, it combines its port and military weight with tourism, being the gateway to the Cinque Terre, the famous group of coastal villages and UNESCO World Heritage Site, and to the Gulf of Poets. Its maritime vocation links it to water sports. La Spezia was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2016, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
