About the city
Livorno is a city in Tuscany, capital of its province, one of the main ports of the Tyrrhenian Sea and of all Italy. Founded as an ideal city by the Medici in the 16th century, it is famous for its Venezia Nuova district, crossed by canals, and for its open and cosmopolitan character, a legacy of its status as a free port. With some 157,000 inhabitants, it combines its intense port activity with a seafront, the Terrazza Mascagni. Its coast and maritime vocation link it to water sports, with sailing and swimming as local traditions. Livorno was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2019, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
