About the city
Macerata is a city in the Marche, capital of its province, located atop a hill between the rivers Chienti and Potenza, in the interior of the region, between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. With almost 31,000 inhabitants, it preserves a notable walled historic centre and houses one of the oldest universities in Italy. It is famous for its Sferisterio, a monumental neoclassical open-air arena that hosts a prestigious opera festival each summer.
