About the city
Mantua (Mantova) is a city in Lombardy, capital of its province, in the south-east of the region, surrounded on three sides by artificial lakes formed by the river Mincio. It is one of the great cities of the Italian Renaissance: under the lordship of the Gonzaga it reached notable artistic splendour, with the Ducal Palace and the Palazzo Te as jewels, and its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with nearby Sabbioneta. With some 39,000 inhabitants, its lakes and river setting favour rowing, cycling and outdoor activities. Mantua was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2019, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
