About the city

Monaco, the principality on the shores of the Mediterranean, is the World Capital of Sport 2025, in a direct handover from Sofia 2024. Prince Albert II signed the commemorative plaque at a ceremony in the Prince's Palace in February 2025, formally marking the city-state's assumption of the title. The distinction recognises a sporting tradition spanning more than a century: Monaco hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters tennis tournament — one of the oldest in the world, founded in 1887 — and sustains a network of 51 national federations, 24 clubs and more than 4,300 licence holders. The principality framed its title year around sport for all, sustainability and eco-friendly facilities, and carried that message to the UN General Assembly, where it championed sport as a driver of peace, education and sustainable development.
