Montería

Montería is the capital of the department of Córdoba, located in northern Colombia on the banks of the Sinú River, approximately 50 kilometers from the Caribbean Sea. Founded on May 1, 1777 by Spanish officer Antonio de la Torre y Miranda under the name San Jerónimo de Buenavista, the city has served as the departmental capital since the creation of the Department of Córdoba in 1952. With over 527,000 inhabitants, it is one of the main urban centers of the Colombian Caribbean and is distinguished by its cattle ranching and cultural identity, being the birthplace of the porro — a folkloric music genre — and of the vueltiao hat, a national symbol of Colombia.

In recent years, Montería has consolidated an active agenda in citizen sport and recreation, supported by its important network of public spaces along the Sinú River and community health-focused physical activity programs. The city's participation in the ACES Activa program demonstrates the institutional drive to integrate sport as a transversal axis of human and social development in a regional capital with a leadership vocation in the Colombian Caribbean.
