About the city

Nitra is a city in south-western Slovakia, capital of the region of the same name, set at the foot of Mount Zobor in the valley of the river Nitra, some 90 kilometres north-east of Bratislava. It is one of the oldest cities in the country: first mentioned in the 9th century, it was the centre of the Principality of Nitra, later united into Great Moravia, and in 880 it became the seat of the first known Christian bishopric on Slovak soil. Its castle, with St Emmeram's Cathedral, overlooks a city of around 86,000 inhabitants that is also a major university centre, home to Constantine the Philosopher University and the Slovak University of Agriculture. Its leading sports clubs are the ice hockey club HK Nitra, three-time Slovak league champions (2016, 2024 and 2026), and the historic FC Nitra, founded in 1909 and now in the third tier after financial difficulties; the city is also the hometown of race walker Matej Tóth, Olympic champion over 50 kilometres in 2016. Nitra was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2018, a title that places it within the Slovak representation of the ACES network.
