About the territory

Nuevo León is a state in north-eastern Mexico, with its capital in Monterrey and 5,784,442 inhabitants according to the 2020 census, the seventh most populous in the country. It is organised into 51 municipalities, and around 92% of its population lives in the Monterrey metropolitan area. The Sierra Madre Oriental covers just over half of its territory and culminates in Cerro Potosí, at 3,710 metres. It is one of Mexico's great economies: its gross domestic product was the third highest in the country in 2022, with manufacturing as its main engine.

Sport in Nuevo León revolves around Monterrey football, with two top-flight clubs: C.F. Monterrey (Rayados), five-time Liga MX champions, and Tigres UANL. The Estadio BBVA, in Guadalupe, opened in 2015 with more than 50,000 seats, staged the final of the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship and hosted four matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup under the name Estadio Monterrey. Baseball has a benchmark in the Sultanes de Monterrey, ten-time champions since 1939, and professional basketball in Fuerza Regia, who play at the Gimnasio Nuevo León.

Nuevo León has been designated American Region of Sport 2027 by ACES. In 2026 the bid underwent an assessment process in which delegations from the evaluation committee reviewed key sports facilities and school and high-performance sport programmes, with the State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport (INDE) as counterpart. The state government presented an investment in 500 sports courts as part of its sports policy. The recognition, regional in scope, adds Nuevo León to the continental network of ACES, within the Mexican representation.
