About the city
Odivelas is a city in the Lisbon metropolitan area, some 8 km north-west of the centre of the capital, seat of a municipality created in 1998 that is home to some 148,000 inhabitants, according to the 2021 census, in just 26.5 km². Its main monument is the Monastery of São Dinis, built at the behest of King Denis, whose remains rest there, and its convent confectionery, with white quince paste as its emblem, is part of its identity. Since 2004 it has been connected to Lisbon by the Yellow Line of the metro. Its sports facilities include the Pavilhão Municipal Susana Barroso and the municipal pools, and its most representative club is Odivelas Futebol Clube; the triple jumper Nelson Évora also grew up in Odivelas. Odivelas was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2020, a title that places it within the Portuguese representation of the ACES network.
