About the city

Olomouc is a city in Moravia, in the east of the Czech Republic, on the river Morava and at the centre of the Haná ethnographic region, with around 100,000 inhabitants. It was a co-capital of Moravia and its great ecclesiastical centre: the bishopric was founded in 1063 and raised to an archbishopric in 1777, and Palacký University, founded in 1573, is the oldest in Moravia. Its main square is home to the Holy Trinity Column, a Baroque work inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000, and the town hall keeps an astronomical clock rebuilt between 1947 and 1955. In sport, the city is home to SK Sigma Olomouc, which plays in the Czech top football division at the Andrův stadion, and HC Olomouc, of the ice hockey Extraliga. Olomouc was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2017, a title that places it within the Czech representation of the ACES network.
