About the city
Orvieto is a town in the province of Terni, in Umbria, spectacularly located atop a great rock of volcanic tuff rising above the valley, in the south-west of the region. With just over 5,000 inhabitants in its core, it is famous for its Gothic cathedral, one of the most beautiful in Italy, for its underground excavated Etruscan caves and for its wine. Its elevated position and its setting of hills favour hiking and outdoor activities. Orvieto was recognised by ACES Europe as European Town of Sport 2017, a title reserved for municipalities of fewer than 25,000 inhabitants, which places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
