About the city

Palaio Faliro is a coastal municipality in Attica, in the South Athens regional unit, located some 6 kilometres from central Athens, on the eastern shore of Phalerum Bay, on the Saronic Gulf. In antiquity it was the deme of Phalerum, the main port of Athens before Themistocles promoted Piraeus. With some 64,000 inhabitants, its seafront was transformed for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and today combines a promenade, the Flisvos marina and Flisvos Public Park. In sport it is home to AC Palaio Faliro, in water polo, and Palaio Faliro B.C., in basketball, and for eleven years the municipality has co-organised the Aphrodite Cup, an international rhythmic gymnastics tournament. In July 2026, ACES Europe designated Palaio Faliro as European City of Sport 2027, following an evaluation visit to its facilities and municipal sports programmes.
