About the city

Palermo is the capital of Sicily, the largest city on the island, located on the north-west coast, at the head of a broad bay dominated by Monte Pellegrino. A city of Phoenician foundation and very long history, it was the capital of a Norman kingdom and is an extraordinary melting pot of cultures — Arab, Norman, Byzantine — whose Arab-Norman architectural heritage is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With more than 600,000 inhabitants, it combines its rich heritage with a Mediterranean coastline. Its bay and climate favour water and outdoor sports. Palermo was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2007, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
