About the city
Palmira is the second most populous municipality in the Valle del Cauca department and one of Colombia's most significant agro-industrial centres. Founded in the 17th century on the banks of the Cauca River, its development has been historically tied to export agriculture, particularly sugar cane, coffee and tobacco. At an altitude of 1,001 metres above sea level and with a warm, stable climate, the municipality has established itself as a hub for industrial and scientific investment, hosting the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), a world-renowned research institution.
In the realm of sport and public health, Palmira boasts an extensive network of parks, cycling paths and sports facilities that support physical activity for its citizens. Its intermediate urban character — with nearly 300,000 inhabitants — gives it an ideal profile for developing citizen sport and community wellbeing programmes aligned with the standards promoted by international organisations such as ACES.
