About the city

Peñaflor is a municipality in the province of Talagante, in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, located 37 kilometers southwest of the Chilean capital at an elevation of 342 meters. With a projected population of 105,498 inhabitants in 2023, it covers 69 km² along the lower course of the Mapocho River, shortly before its confluence with the Maipo. Its name evokes the rocky riverbed that in spring becomes blanketed with wildflowers.

The history of Peñaflor reaches back to the pre-Hispanic settlements of Pelvín and Malloco. Officially founded on August 23, 1871, the municipality is home to the Parroquia Niño Dios de Malloco, the third oldest parish in Chile, established in 1579. In the early twentieth century Peñaflor was a summer retreat for Santiago's aristocracy, and its character changed dramatically in 1939 with the arrival of the Bata shoe factory, which employed more than 8,000 workers and transformed a rural community into an industrial hub.

Peñaflor's sporting legacy is inseparable from the Bata factory. Club Deportivo Thomas Bata, founded on September 18, 1940, became the most important club on the outskirts of Santiago in football, basketball, and hockey. Its basketball team is the only Chilean club to have won the South American Club Champions Championship, achieved in 1967 in Antofagasta. Club de Ciclismo Bata organized the Gran Premio Bata, a landmark event in Chilean cycling during the 1960s and 1970s. Today the Municipal Sports Corporation manages 64 free sports workshops, and the Complejo Deportivo La Mora offers an athletics track, an artificial turf football pitch, and trails for walking and cycling.

Peñaflor participates in the ACES Activa network with 18 registered events, 13 of them as part of the Latin American Month of Physical Activity campaign, consolidating its identity as an active municipality within the Metropolitan Region.
