About the city
Pereira is the capital of the department of Risaralda and the largest urban center of Colombia's Coffee Region (Eje Cafetero), a territory inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 for its Coffee Cultural Landscape. Founded on August 30, 1863 at 1,416 meters above sea level, the city is organized around the Otún River and serves as a connectivity hub between the departments of Caldas, Quindío, and Valle del Cauca. With approximately 482,000 inhabitants in its municipal area and over 700,000 in its metropolitan area, it is the second city of the paisa region and one of the main development poles in the central-western part of the country.
From a sports and citizen physical activity perspective, Pereira offers a broad and diversified range of options including professional football — with Deportivo Pereira as a benchmark in the national top division — adventure sports such as paragliding, kayaking, and canopy that take advantage of its mountainous geography and the Otún River, and a growing culture of active mobility. The city's participation in the ACES Activa program reflects an institutional commitment to promoting citizen sport as a tool for public health, social cohesion, and quality of life.
