About the territory

Pernambuco is a state in the Northeast of Brazil, with its capital in Recife and more than nine million inhabitants according to the 2022 census, which places it among the most populous in the country. Its territory unfolds a sharp contrast, from the coastal strip of the Zona da Mata to the agreste and the semi-arid sertão of the interior. It is one of Brazil's great cultural cradles: the frevo, born in Recife, is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the carnival of Recife and Olinda —with the multitudinous Galo da Madrugada— ranks among the most celebrated in the country. Olinda, a historic city, crowns that heritage.

In sport, Pernambuco concentrates one of the most intense football traditions of the Northeast, with three great century-old clubs in Recife: Sport Club do Recife, founded in 1905, Clube Náutico Capibaribe and Santa Cruz Futebol Clube, whose rivalries fill the local derbies. Its most modern venue, the Arena de Pernambuco, in São Lourenço da Mata, opened in 2013 with capacity for more than 44,000 spectators and hosted the 2013 Confederations Cup and five matches of the 2014 World Cup.

In January 2025, ACES Europe recognised Pernambuco as American Region of Sport, making it the first state of Brazil to receive the distinction. The title, of regional scope, was granted after an assessment process with facility inspections across the state territory, at a ceremony held at the European Parliament. The recognition rewards a state public sports policy deployed in schools and athlete-support programmes, and adds Pernambuco to the continental network of ACES.
