About the territory

Piedmont is a region in north-west Italy, with Turin as its capital, and the second largest in the country by area, covering 25,387 square kilometres. It borders France, Switzerland, the Aosta Valley, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Liguria, and the Alps surround it on three sides, with peaks such as Monviso, at whose foot the Po rises, and the Monte Rosa massif, whose Punta Nordend (4,609 metres) is the region's highest point. It is organised into seven provinces and the Metropolitan City of Turin. Its heritage includes the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, and the Vineyard Landscape of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, inscribed in 2014.

In sport, Turin hosted the XX Olympic Winter Games, held in February 2006, and the 2007 Winter Universiade. The region is home to two football clubs with a long history, Juventus and Torino, alongside others such as Novara, Alessandria, Casale and Pro Vercelli. Its mountains host highly developed ski resorts such as Sestriere and Alagna Valsesia.

ACES Europe recognised Piedmont as European Region of Sport 2022, the first time the title had gone to an Italian region, as the Region itself highlighted. The bid was made official in April 2021 and the process concluded in October that year, after an ACES delegation visited sports facilities across the territory; according to the Region, Piedmont was chosen as 'a good example of sport for all as a tool for health, integration, education and respect'. The recognition crowns a long Piedmontese presence in the ACES network, with Turin as European Capital of Sport and award-winning cities, towns and communities such as Biella, Novara, Monferrato and Valsesia.
