About the city

Pitești is the capital of Argeș County, in the historical region of Muntenia in southern Romania, a city on the banks of the river Argeș linked to Bucharest by the A1 motorway. First recorded in 1386, it was a temporary residence of several Wallachian princes, and its heritage is headed by the Orthodox Church of Saint George, completed in 1656. With around 141,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most industrialised centres in the country, tied to the Dacia car plant in neighbouring Mioveni. In sport, its flagship is FC Argeș, founded in 1953 and league champion in 1971-72 and 1978-79 with Nicolae Dobrin as its great star, alongside BCM U Pitești basketball and Argeș Volei women's volleyball. Pitești was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2013, a title it received at the European Parliament in November 2012, taking over from Iași.
