Potenza is the capital of Basilicata, one of Italy's least populated regions, and the country's highest provincial capital, set at around 800 metres of altitude in the mountainous heart of the Lucanian Apennines. With just over 56,000 inhabitants, it is an inland city shaped by its relief, with a historic centre atop a hill and a mountain geography that has conditioned its development. Its Apennine setting links it to outdoor and mountain sport. Potenza was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2021, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
