About the city
Quito, capital of the Republic of Ecuador, is a city without equal in the American continent. At 2,850 meters above sea level, cradled by the Andes and just a few kilometers from the zero parallel, it was the first city in the world to receive UNESCO's World Heritage designation, in 1978, on the strength of a historic center that has preserved the colonial legacy of the New World better than any other. That geographical and historical singularity is not a footnote: it permeates the city's entire identity, including the way it experiences sport.
Quito's altitude is a first-order sporting factor. Its football teams — and particularly Liga Deportiva Universitaria, four-time continental champions — have turned that natural condition into competitive advantage in continental tournaments. The Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, the White House of Ecuadorian football and host of the 2025 Women's Copa América, and the historic Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa are the temples of a city that lives football with intensity and that boasts a growing multidisciplinary infrastructure.
Beyond elite sport, Quito has committed to sport as a tool of social cohesion in a complex and constantly expanding urban fabric. Its participation in the American Sports Week and its integration into the ACES America network express that vocation: a city that understands physical movement not as a privilege but as a civic right, and that has the most spectacular natural setting on the continent — volcanoes, valleys and the Equator line — as the backdrop for a truly singular sporting experience.
