About the city
Ravenna is a city in Emilia-Romagna, near the Adriatic coast, famous worldwide for its Early Christian and Byzantine mosaics, eight of whose monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the capital of the Western Roman Empire in its final phase, then of the Ostrogothic kingdom and the Byzantine exarchate, a past that makes it one of Italy's great cities of art. It also houses the tomb of Dante Alighieri, who died in the city. With some 158,000 inhabitants, it combines its heritage with an active port and a tourist coast. Ravenna was recognised by ACES Europe as European City of Sport 2016, a title that places it within the broad Italian representation of the ACES network.
